Johann Maria Farina(1685-1766) came to Cologne from Italy and named his unsurpassed fragrance Eau de Cologne in honor of his new hometown. He brought with him the art of distilling alcohol from wine from Italy. This provided the basis for creating a high quality scented water. Everyone loved the perfumer's new fragrance, among his noble customers were Empress Elisabeth, Cologne Elector Clemens August and Goethe. Since there was no trademark protection right at the time of the Rococo, a whole class of fragrances is now called Eau de Cologne.
