In January 1955, D.F. Malherbe opened its doors for 143 Afrikaans-speaking learners from the southern suburbs of Port Elizabeth for the first time.
Some of the first things that got attention were school uniform, a school song, a name for the school and a badge. When the current school building was commissioned in 1956, the school badge was also ready. The symbolism of the coat of arms is as follows: The Cape Receife lighthouse is stuck on the rocks and no matter how the stormy sea rages, it still spreads its light in the dark. The ray of light forms a wreath in a wavy shape, which in turn represents the propagation of civilization and literacy.
The well-known Afrikaans poet, philosopher and academic, prof. D.F. Malherbe, wrote the school song that was first sung in 1957. In 1958, the first matric class (11 learners) began their schooling at D.F. Malherbe completed.
In January 2011 the school opened its doors for the first English class. What a proud moment that in the year that we celebrated our diamond jubilee the first English class finished their high school careers in D.F. Malherbe. At present there is one English class per grade. In grades 8 to 9 we follow a policy of parallel medium instruction. As from gr. 10 onwards the medium of instruction depends on the learner’s subject choices. In subjects such as Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Accounting and Life Sciences we attempt to follow the same policy as in gr. 8 and 9 (depending on educator availability. In subjects where there are not enough learners to justify 2 separate classes we offer duel medium instruction.
