In 1976 His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said established the first Technical School in Oman. It was established under the aegis of the Royal Guard of Oman with the aim of providing a first class Technical Education for Omani boys from an early age. In the first few years of operation, only the top students from the various regions of Oman were selected and priority was given to siblings of Royal Guard personnel. A few years later, the school’s remit was changed to that of a Technical College. Subsequently, access was widened to incorporate a wider range of students from all regions and sectors in Omani society and all prospective students were required to sit an entrance test. Based on the results of the entrance test, a final selection of first year students was made. Over the past three decades the intake of students has gradually increased from the initial twenty students to fifty students per year.
The college currently delivers core programs in Mathematics, English, Science, Physics, Arabic, Islamic Studies and Workshop Skills across all the years. Additionally, in the senior school, there are various extra modules in Electronics, Mechanical Engineering and Business Studies. These extra modules comprise the core modules of the various BTEC/EDEXCEL qualifications that the college offers in Engineering: The BTEC First Diploma and The National Diploma in Engineering. (The college has been recognized as a ( Centre of Excellence’ in the delivery of these BTEC programs.) Other international qualifications and programs are offered to students at various stages such as IGCSE and IELTS, and a Local Ministry of Education program is offered in the final order to fulfill the requirements for the award of the Omani Bilingual Technical Secondary Diploma (known as the Thanawiya Diploma).
The college is highly regarded both in the Arabian Gulf region and abroad, and student engineering projects have won major local and international awards. The college recently relocated to a new state of the art 20,000 meter squared campus with a gymnasium, swimming pool and living accommodation for over 200 boarding students and 12 teachers. All faculty have been issued with laptops and every classroom and workshop has both Wi-Fi and smart boards to enhance the student learning experience. Many of the alumni of the college now occupy key positions in industry and government and continue to make major contributions to the development of Oman.
The College Today.
Keeping abreast with developments in education, the college, with its gleaming modern workshops, classrooms and computer rooms, offers the very best in secondary and technical education. As in state schools, boys study all the traditional subjects : Arabic language, Islamic studies, social affairs, mathematics, and the three sciences. And then, in parallel with these studies, through the medium of English, they follow courses in mechanical, computer and electrical engineering, courses which lead finally to a British Edexel BTEC level 3 Extended diploma in Engineering. Given that English is the medium of study, enormous importance is given to the study of the English language, and boys receive intensive language training throught their stay at the college. Boys must have time for relaxation, of course. At the college, they are well served. There are first rate sporting facilities, facilities including a large modern gymnasium and a 25-metre-long swimming pool.
