Job role
The discipline of English Studies in the School of Arts at the Durban (Howard College)
campus offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in a wide spectrum of
literature written in English ranging from the ‘canonical’, to African and South African
texts, as well as international and classical texts. The successful candidate will be
expected to carry a full lecture load; to supervise postgraduate students at an
appropriate level; to carry out academic research; and to contribute to managing the
administrative tasks within the discipline.
In view of the impact of the global pandemic on tertiary education, an appropriate
candidate would need to be adaptable to an online/digital learning environment. Some
criteria that may be advantageous include: completion of a PhD, as well as evidence of
research activity and/or supervision experience. A successful candidate who does not
have a PhD or is not registered for the qualification would be required to register for a
doctorate on appointment.
Minimum requirements:
Lecturer:
Master’s degree in English literature.
Minimum of two years teaching experience in English literature.
Knowledge of interpretative skills of literary texts, as well as critical thinking
in the theories of literary studies.
Familiarity with online teaching methods.
Short-listed candidates will be expected to deliver to the selection Committee, a
10-minute presentation of a sample lecture on an English literary topic.

Company background
The university was formed by the merger of the University of Natal and the University of Durban(Westville), in 2004.
The Council of the University of Natal voted on 31 May 2002 to offer the post of Vice-Chancellor and University Principal to world-renowned medical scientist and former Medical Research Council President - Professor Malegapuru Makgoba who assumed office on the 1 September 2002. He was entrusted with leading the University of Natal into the merger with the University of Durban-Westville. In so doing, he became the last Vice-Chancellor of the University of Natal. Professor Makgoba succeeded Professor Brenda Gourley as Vice-Chancellor.[6]
Having served a brief stint as the interim Vice-Chancellor in 2004 he was formally appointed as the founding Vice-Chancellor of the newly merged University of KwaZulu-Natal. He was installed at a ceremony on the 30 September 2005.
Professor Makgoba served two 5 year terms of office and retired in 2015. He is currently the Health Ombudsman of the Republic of South Africa. He was succeeded by Dr Albert van Jaarsveld.
